Welcome to the Introduction to Scientific Computing course at the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering, FIUNA.

Numerical methods are central to engineering practice today, driven by the increasing complexity of mathematical models and by the steady rise in computational power available at lower cost. Problems in structural, thermal, and fluid analysis — among many others — are routinely solved through numerical approximation rather than closed-form solutions.

Given the breadth of engineering problems, this course covers the core families of numerical methods: linear systems, eigenvalue problems, differential equations, numerical integration, and function approximation. Particular emphasis is placed on building a solid foundation for methods used in the Finite Element Method, which relies heavily on linear systems and numerical integration in its formulation.
